About Me:

I'm a queer software developer living in the Midwest but developing systems for a California-based private foundation. My partner, John Schwartzkopf (http://www.johnsawdust.com) designs and executes sculptural designs in wood - both functional and purely decorative works. We've been together about a decade. We've created a unique living space where we have lots of fun: check us out at http://www.tomsidebottom.com.

While I've built software for more than a quarter-century, I was originally trained in biochemistry. I dropped out of a graduate program because I hated the work. I had every intention of going into philosophy of religion. Work seduced me - I started designing software systems and loved it - but my interest in philosophy remains strong: especially the philosophy of transcendence, such as Alfred North Whitehead and the Buddhist philosphers.

I've also been an astrologer since I was ten years old - a strange interest for someone born into a fundamentalist Christian home. After I extricated myself from my childhood religious teachings, I fell in love with the Western Mystery Tradition, especially the language of alchemy/hermeticism, and the Tarot. I'm currently at work designing a new Tarot deck.

What's up right now?

I've been creating software for a long time now. I love it, but I'm growing weary of corporate politics - even those present in the non-profit world. I'd love to return to working for myself - but with a different twist than I've done before. I'd like to connect my livelihood with my inner life. I've managed to do that in part because I work remotely. Now I want to take the integration deeper.

I've taken a stab at a new way of work with a new astrological website: http://www.cosmictiming.com. I'd built an astrological website before, but CosmicTiming is different. I'm working hard to invite people who aren't astrologers and give them high quality input from a computerized analysis of their chart. I also decided to make this site a free-will gift.
